Ibn Majid spent his life at sea and wrote it all down — charts, star positions, monsoon timings, coastlines, and the practical craft of finding your way across open water.
His navigational works were relied on by the explorers of his age and long afterwards, which is how he came to be known as the master navigator of the Indian Ocean.
