What to look for

Whether you call it a sejjadah, a musalla or a janamaz, what matters most is how it feels under your knees and forehead. Padded mats with high-density foam make a genuine difference on hard floors and tiles — worth it if you pray on anything other than carpet.

Material matters for washing. Organic cotton mats can go through the machine; velvet mats with removable covers let you wash the cover and keep the padding dry.

Size runs from around 48 x 96 cm for children up to 120 x 65 cm XL for adults. If you're tall, go XL — running out of mat during sujood is the most common complaint we hear.
