Ibn Khaldun is remembered as a historian, but that undersells him. He was also a judge, a government minister, a hafiz of the Qur'an, and — most significantly — the first person to study how societies themselves rise and decline.
That work, the Muqaddimah, is regarded as the foundation of sociology, written several centuries before the field had a name.
