Ibn Battuta spent thirty years travelling, covering more than 100,000 kilometres at a time when there were no planes, no trains, and no maps worth the name.
He reached West Africa, India, the Maldives and China, and performed Hajj four times along the way. The account he dictated on his return remains one of the most remarkable travel records ever written.
