Ibn al-Baitar was a botanist and pharmacist who spent his life cataloguing plants and what they could treat — identifying more than 300 with medicinal use, many of them previously unrecorded.
His compendium remained a standard reference for centuries, and the respect it earned him is captured in the name he is still known by: the doctor of natural medicine.
